P2P in Argentina: what the rules say

Argentina regulates the businesses in the middle of a crypto trade rather than the people trading. Law 27,739 of 2024 wrote a definition of virtual asset service provider (PSAV) into the anti-money-laundering law: anyone who, as a business, swaps virtual assets for pesos or other currencies, transfers them, or holds them for someone else. The same law put the Comisión Nacional de Valores (CNV) in charge of a central PSAV register. On 14 October 2026 the CNV replaced its PSAV rulebook with General Resolution 1172, which forbids registered providers to offer mixers or other anonymising tools and adds a monthly activity report from 1 November 2026.

The central bank keeps the regulated money system out of crypto. Communication "A" 7506 of May 2022 bars banks from offering digital-asset operations, and Communication "A" 7759 of 4 May 2023 extended the bar to payment service providers that run payment accounts. The BCRA explained that this rules out in-app buy buttons and that people who want crypto must trade it on their own. In October 2026 the BCRA's superintendent of financial institutions, Juan Curutchet, said that opening crypto to banks looked possible only in a second Milei presidency, iProUP reported.

Where the dólar blue comes from

The parallel figure on this page is the dólar blue: dollars bought outside official channels and without oversight from the exchange authority. It is a product of currency controls. In 2011 dollar buyers needed tax-agency approval; on 1 September 2019 individuals were given a monthly purchase cap, cut sharply again that October. In April 2025 the government lifted most restrictions for individuals and let the official rate float within a band, yet a blue quote is still published every day. Argentines also follow a "dólar cripto" taken from USDT quotes, which iProUP says weighs most at weekends, when the other dollar rates do not trade.

How people pay: Mercado Pago, Lemon Cash, Ualá, Brubank

Mercado Pago is the method sellers list most often, followed by Lemon Cash, Ualá, Brubank and Naranja X. Under Communication "A" 7759 a payment-account wallet may not sell you crypto or route you to a seller with a button, so a P2P order paid from one of these apps is an ordinary peso transfer that you start yourself, to the person named in the order. iProUP reports that Mercado Pago, today a fintech, expects a banking licence before the end of 2026, which would place it under the banks' crypto ban.

Tax and reporting

PwC's tax summary for Argentina, last reviewed on 16 June 2026, states that capital gains on digital currencies are subject to a 15% capital gains tax. Keep the order history, the transfer receipts and the peso amount of each trade so the gain can be worked out.

What to watch

Before you deposit with a platform that serves Argentina, check that its local entity appears on the CNV's PSAV register.

Questions people ask

What is the USDT to ARS rate today?

Right now buying 1,000 USDT on P2P costs about 1,655 ARS per USDT (1,654,820 ARS in total). Selling 1,000 USDT gets about 1,654 per USDT. Updated 27 Oct 2026, 14:59 UTC.

Why is the P2P price different from the official exchange rate?

The official mid rate is 1,528 ARS per dollar. P2P sellers price in local demand for dollars, payment risk and their margin, so the P2P price is 8.28% above the official rate at the moment.

Which platform is cheapest for USDT in Argentina right now?

Bybit P2P has the best eligible price for a 1,000 USDT order in the latest observation. Platforms change places during the day; the table above is refreshed every 90 seconds for ARS.

Is crypto legal in Argentina?

Argentina regulates crypto businesses instead of banning crypto. Law 27,739 of 2024 defines virtual asset service providers (PSAVs) and requires them to be on a register kept by the CNV, which rewrote its PSAV rules with General Resolution 1172 on 14 October 2026. The central bank keeps banks (Communication A 7506) and payment-account wallets (Communication A 7759) from offering crypto operations themselves, so people trade on registered platforms and pay with ordinary peso transfers. In October 2026 the BCRA signalled it would not open crypto to banks soon.

USDT vs dólar blue: what is the difference?

The dólar blue is the street price of cash dollars bought outside official channels, a market that grew out of years of currency controls. USDT is a dollar-linked token that Argentines buy on P2P boards by sending pesos from a wallet or bank account to the seller. Local press tracks the USDT quote as the dólar cripto, and iProUP notes it matters most at weekends, when the other dollar rates are closed. This page shows the P2P price and the blue reference side by side, so you can compare them live.

Is there crypto tax in Argentina?

Yes. PwC's tax summary for Argentina, last reviewed in June 2026, says capital gains on digital currencies are taxed at 15%. Keep a record of every P2P order, including the peso amount paid or received and the transfer receipt from Mercado Pago or your bank, so you can work out the gain. Separately, from November 2026 registered crypto platforms must send the CNV a monthly report on their active clients and trading volume, so platform activity is increasingly visible to the authorities.
