P2P in Nigeria: what the rules say
Nigeria's position is split between the central bank and the capital-market regulator. On 22 December 2023 the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issued Guidelines on Operations of Bank Accounts for Virtual Assets Service Providers, reversing its earlier ban on banks running accounts for crypto firms. Those guidelines cover only providers licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and PwC Nigeria's reading is that they do not contemplate peer-to-peer trades at all, which implies bank accounts used for direct P2P deals still sit outside what the CBN permits. On the SEC side, the Investments and Securities Act, 2025 repealed the 2007 Act, and the SEC's Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme (ARIP) is the sandbox through which virtual asset service providers move toward full registration.
The platform picture changed in 2024. Binance announced on 5 March 2024 that it would discontinue all naira services, and its notice records that Binance P2P had already delisted every NGN pair on 28 February 2024. Binance accounts themselves stayed open; only the naira services ended.
How people pay: bank transfer, OPay, Moniepoint
- Bank transfer runs on NIBSS Instant Payments (NIP), an account-number-based, real-time transfer system. Its Name Enquiry step returns the beneficiary's account name before you confirm, so check that name against the seller's verified name on the order.
- OPay wallets are a common alternative. OPay's terms (version 5.0, 26 July 2025) let it block an account immediately if it reasonably suspects use for fraud or money laundering, and apply restrictions and report to law enforcement without telling you first. Only accept payment from an account in the verified buyer's own name.
- Moniepoint opens a personal account with a phone number, email address and BVN at KYC Level 1, and transaction limits are raised by upgrading your KYC level in the app. Check your level before you take a large order.
Tax and reporting
On 31 July 2026 the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) issued Guidelines on the Taxation of Virtual Assets under the Nigeria Tax Act, 2025, and they name P2P marketplace operators alongside exchanges and other service providers. As reported by Nairametrics, gains are taxed when you sell or otherwise dispose of an asset, at progressive rates for individuals and 30% for companies other than small ones; simply holding is not a taxable event, and moving assets between wallets you own is exempt for individuals. Aluko & Oyebode notes that the guidelines make service providers withhold and remit tax at source.

Questions people ask
What is the USDT to NGN rate today?
Right now buying 1,000 USDT on P2P costs about 1,383 NGN per USDT (1,382,985 NGN in total). Selling 1,000 USDT gets about 1,389 per USDT. Updated 27 Oct 2026, 15:34 UTC.
Why is the P2P price different from the official exchange rate?
The official mid rate is 1,334 NGN per dollar. P2P sellers price in local demand for dollars, payment risk and their margin, so the P2P price is 3.65% above the official rate at the moment.
Which platform is cheapest for USDT in Nigeria right now?
Bybit P2P has the best eligible price for a 1,000 USDT order in the latest observation. Platforms change places during the day; the table above is refreshed every 90 seconds for NGN.
Is Binance banned in Nigeria?
Binance ended its naira services rather than leaving Nigerian users altogether. Its announcement of 5 March 2024 says Binance P2P delisted all NGN trading pairs on 28 February 2024, NGN deposits stopped on 5 March, withdrawals on 8 March, and remaining naira balances were converted to USDT. The notice, amended in June 2024, says users could keep accessing their Binance accounts. In practice, buying or selling USDT for naira now happens on other P2P platforms, which is why the table above compares them.
Is crypto legal in Nigeria?
Crypto is regulated rather than banned. In December 2023 the Central Bank of Nigeria allowed banks to open designated accounts for virtual asset service providers licensed by the SEC, reversing its earlier ban. The Investments and Securities Act, 2025 replaced the 2007 Act, and the SEC runs an Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme through which crypto platforms move toward full registration. PwC Nigeria notes that the CBN guidelines do not cover direct peer-to-peer trades, so bank accounts used for P2P deals are not part of that permission.
What is the crypto tax law in Nigeria?
Crypto gains fall under the Nigeria Tax Act, 2025. On 31 July 2026 the Nigeria Revenue Service issued Guidelines on the Taxation of Virtual Assets that apply to individuals, exchanges and P2P marketplace operators. According to reporting on the guidelines, individuals pay progressive income tax rates on gains when they sell or dispose of an asset, companies other than small companies pay 30%, holding alone is not taxed, and transfers between an individual's own wallets are exempt. Service providers are expected to withhold and remit tax at source.
