P2P in the euro area: what the rules say

Crypto services in every EU member state fall under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2023/1114, known as MiCA. Its stablecoin titles have applied since 30 June 2024 and the rest of the regulation since 30 December 2024. Article 59 limits the provision of crypto-asset services in the Union to authorised crypto-asset service providers and to certain firms that already hold a licence, such as banks and electronic money institutions. Article 143 let providers that operated under national law before 30 December 2024 carry on until 1 July 2026 at the latest, so that grace period is now over everywhere.

USDT sits uneasily in this framework. MiCA defines an e-money token as a crypto-asset that keeps a stable value by referencing one official currency, and Article 48 allows such a token to be offered to the public or admitted to trading in the Union only by an issuer authorised as a bank or e-money institution that has notified a white paper. Exchanges acted on that: Binance removed its USDT spot pairs for users in the European Economic Area at the end of March 2025, while keeping custody, deposits and withdrawals. An ESMA spokesperson told Cointelegraph that custody and transfer services for non-compliant stablecoins do not breach MiCA. The EUR prices above come from the P2P boards that still quote USDT against the euro.

How people pay: SEPA Instant, Revolut, Wise

  • SEPA Instant is the method EUR sellers list most. Under the Instant Payments Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2024/886, the payee's bank must make the money available within 10 seconds. Euro-area banks had to be able to receive instant transfers by 9 January 2025 and send them by 9 October 2025, and may not charge more than for an ordinary SEPA transfer. From 9 October 2025 they must also run a free verification of payee check on the name and IBAN before you approve a transfer; if it flags a mismatch with the seller's name on the order, stop and ask.
  • Revolut is the next most common method in EUR ads; pay only into an account held in the name shown on the order.
  • Wise is listed by many sellers, but Wise's own policy forbids sending money to individuals to buy cryptocurrency and receiving money from individuals for crypto you sold; it says it may reject such payments or close the account.

Tax and reporting

There is no EU-wide crypto tax: rates and rules are set by each member state. What the EU has harmonised is reporting. Under DAC8, in force from 1 January 2026, reporting crypto-asset service providers collect data on the transactions of EU-resident users, including stablecoins, and the first reports on 2026 are exchanged between tax authorities by 30 September 2027.

Questions people ask

What is the USDT to EUR rate today?

Right now buying 1,000 USDT on P2P costs about 0.8940 EUR per USDT (894.00 EUR in total). Selling 1,000 USDT gets about — per USDT. Updated 27 Oct 2026, 15:34 UTC.

Why is the P2P price different from the official exchange rate?

The official mid rate is 0.8921 EUR per dollar. P2P sellers price in local demand for dollars, payment risk and their margin, so the P2P price is 0.21% above the official rate at the moment.

Which platform is cheapest for USDT in the euro area right now?

Bybit P2P has the best eligible price for a 1,000 USDT order in the latest observation. Platforms change places during the day; the table above is refreshed every 90 seconds for EUR.

Is USDT banned in Europe?

Holding USDT is not banned, but trading it on EU platforms has been restricted. MiCA lets a single-currency stablecoin be offered or admitted to trading in the EU only by an issuer authorised as a bank or e-money institution, and USDT is not treated as MiCA-compliant. Binance therefore removed its USDT spot pairs for EEA users at the end of March 2025 while keeping custody, deposits and withdrawals, and an ESMA spokesperson said custody and transfer of such tokens do not breach MiCA. Which P2P ads you can use depends on the platform.

Is crypto legal in the EU?

Yes. Crypto is legal across the EU and regulated by MiCA, Regulation (EU) 2023/1114, which has applied in full since 30 December 2024. Only authorised crypto-asset service providers, or certain already licensed firms such as banks and e-money institutions, may provide crypto services in the Union. Providers that were operating under older national rules could continue only until 1 July 2026 at the latest, so any platform serving EU residents today needs a MiCA authorisation.

Is there an EU crypto tax?

No single EU crypto tax exists. Each member state sets its own rates and rules for gains on crypto, so the tax due depends on where you live. What the EU has harmonised is reporting: under the DAC8 directive, in force from 1 January 2026, crypto-asset service providers collect transaction data on EU-resident users, including stablecoin transactions, and tax authorities exchange the first reports, covering 2026, by 30 September 2027. Keep your own records of every P2P order as well.
