P2P in the UK: what the rules say
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has supervised cryptoasset businesses for anti-money-laundering purposes since 10 January 2020. Under the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, anyone who by way of business exchanges cryptoassets for money, or money for cryptoassets, in the course of a UK business must register with the FCA before starting; the FCA's own scope table lists peer-to-peer providers next to exchanges and crypto ATMs. The FCA stresses that registration is a legal requirement, not a recommendation of the firm. Separately, since 8 October 2023 its financial promotions regime has applied to every firm marketing cryptoassets to UK consumers, including firms based overseas.
A fuller regime is on the way. The government laid draft legislation in December 2025, and on 30 June 2026 the FCA published final rules and guidance for cryptoasset firms that will need permission under the Financial Services and Markets Act; the regime is expected to start on 25 October 2027. Until then, the practical test for any platform you use is whether the legal entity you deal with appears on the FCA register.
How people pay: Revolut, Faster Payments, Monzo
- Faster Payments: a transfer from one UK bank account to another runs over Faster Payments or CHAPS, whether the ad says "Bank Transfer", "Faster Payments" or names Lloyds or Starling. Since 7 October 2024 the Payment Systems Regulator has required firms to reimburse victims of authorised push payment fraud on Faster Payments and CHAPS, normally within five business days of a claim made within 13 months. The rules exclude civil disputes with a genuine supplier, and you lose cover if you were complicit or grossly negligent. Confirmation of Payee checks the account name before you send.
- Revolut is the single most-listed method in GBP ads; as with a bank transfer, send only to an account in the name shown on the order.
- Monzo says customers can use a range of crypto exchanges, but like any regulated bank it may block a small number of transactions based on risk.
Tax and reporting
HMRC treats selling cryptoassets, swapping them for another token, paying with them or giving them away as disposals for Capital Gains Tax. If your total gains in a tax year, which runs from 6 April to 5 April, exceed the tax-free allowance, you must report and pay; the gain is worked out differently for tokens sold within 30 days of buying them. Self Assessment returns have had a cryptoasset section since the 2024 to 2025 tax year. Under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework you must also give every crypto service provider you use, UK-based or not, your full name, date of birth, address and tax number, such as your National Insurance number; missing or inaccurate details given to a UK provider can bring a penalty of up to £300.

The FCA's rules attach to the firm, not to the brand or the product name. Crypto platforms also collect your National Insurance number or UTR so your activity can be matched to your tax record.
